What is legal in St. John's?
There are strict laws and regulations around the legalization of non-medical cannabis. Before you buy, use, or grow your own non-medical cannabis, learn more about what’s legal and what’s not.
Medical cannabis is within the responsibility of Health Canada. To find out more, go to Health Canada.
Is buying weed online legal in St. John's?
In the years predating legalization, you would have to pay a visit to one of the many physical dispensaries around the St. John's area. Many of these stores would only sell for medical purposes to patients.
Today, recreational (a.k.a. non-medical) cannabis is legal in Canada, and each municipality across Newfoundland has the right to decide where and if they want retail stores in their city or town.
The official government-run website to order weed online is the CannabisNL (CNL), although we find their offering a little light and restrictive. Which is why we created our marketplace for shopping Canadian weed online, offering lower prices and a greater selection.

How much weed can I legally possess in St. John's?
Adults 19+ can carry up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis, or its equivalent, in a public place.
In addition, adults cannot possess any more than 1,000 grams of dried non-medical cannabis, or its equivalent, in a non-public place, such as at your home. This limit is per household and is based on the expected yield from four cannabis plants.
You're also able to grow up to four plants per residence (not per person) and will be able to purchase legal seeds and seedlings from CannabisNL.
This is a maximum limit per dwelling, not per person. Having more than four cannabis plants in a private dwelling or possessing a cannabis plant in public that is budding or flowering are criminal offences. Cannabis may only be grown indoors at the dwelling house in which a person ordinarily resides or in a secure, adjacent building such as a shed. Growing cannabis outdoors is not permitted.
You must be 19 years or older to buy, use, possess, or grow non-medical cannabis in St. John's.
Are edibles, topicals, and extracts legal in St. John's?
Cannabis edibles, extracts and topicals are now available at licensed retailers and online. Information on the types of products for sale in Newfoundland and Labrador can be found at getmysupply.co.
As of October 17, 2019, federal cannabis regulations enforced new rules to allow legal production and sale of three new classes of cannabis products:
- Edible cannabis, such as baked goods and beverages;
- Cannabis extracts, such as vaping liquids, tinctures, wax, hash, and cannabis oil; and
- Cannabis topicals, such as creams, lotions and balms, and similar products that are meant to be applied to a person’s skin, hair, or nails
As required by the Cannabis Act, the amended regulations came into effect on October 17, 2019.
For a high-level overview of these new rules, please review: Final Regulations: Edible Cannabis, Cannabis Extracts, Cannabis Topicals.
Information on federal regulations on edible cannabis can be found here.
Can I operate a vehicle or boat high?
Non-medical cannabis consumption is generally not allowed in vehicles whether they are parked or moving, but there are some exceptions to this rule.
Driving while impaired is dangerous and is a criminal offence. Driving while impaired by cannabis or other drugs is still illegal.
Drivers found to be impaired while driving will face driver license suspensions, fines, vehicle impoundment and/or time in jail.
Drivers under the age of 22, commercial drivers and novice drivers are not permitted to have any detectable presence of cannabis in their body, as confirmed by a federally-approved roadside screening device.
It can be used in motorhomes or other motor vehicles, or campers, or trailers when being used as a private residence and parked off a public road or forest service road where camping is allowed.
Cannabis can be transported in a vehicle as long as it’s in its original, unopened packaging, or is inaccessible to the driver and occupants (for example, in the trunk). In addition, a maximum of four non-medical cannabis plants can be transported in a vehicle, but they cannot be budding or flowering.
Non-medical cannabis use is generally not allowed on boats. However, you are allowed to use non-medical cannabis on a boat that is moored or anchored if it has sleeping accommodations, a kitchen and a toilet.
Non-medical cannabis use is allowed in a private cabin on a commercially operated boat if the operator allows it.
Can I use weed publicly in St. John's?
Adults 19+ can generally smoke or vape cannabis in public spaces where tobacco smoking and vaping are allowed. But remember, second-hand smoke can be harmful and irritating to people, especially children, so be mindful when smoking in public spaces.
You can consume cannabis in a private dwelling or yard attached to a private dwelling.
You may be able to consume cannabis in hotel rooms or units in apartment buildings, subject to restrictions that may be imposed by the building owner or operator. Cannabis cannot be consumed in any of the common areas of those buildings.
You may be able to consume cannabis on a rented campsite, subject to restrictions that may be imposed by the park owner or operator. You may be able to consume cannabis in a vehicle that is being used as a temporary or private residence while it is not in motion or on a road.
You are not able to consume cannabis in a public place, a motor vehicle, or a boat, similar to the restrictions on consuming alcohol.
A limited exception applies to medical cannabis. A person with a valid authorization to use medical cannabis under the federal Cannabis Act may consume medical cannabis in an outdoor public place where smoking or vaping is permitted by the Smoke-Free Environment Act, 2005, but cannot consume cannabis in a motor vehicle.

Since legalization in 2018, cannabis has taken Canada by storm. Every day, thousands of new Canadians dabble with cannabis products. Whether using cannabis for medical or recreational purposes, the legalization of the cannabis plant has opened a massive market for the sale of cannabis both in-person and online.
And despite the increased ubiquity of cannabis, the industry continues to be shrouded in mystery for most of us. My Supply Co. was born out of frustration with the confusion, overwhelm, and discomfort around buying and consuming cannabis. So we did something about it, offering a needs-based shopping experience to deliver solutions for sex, anxiety, pain, sleep, energy, focus, and mood.
My Supply Co. exists with one mission in mind: to make weed make sense by marrying purpose, function, design, and authenticity. We believe strongly that, if we are unforgiving to every detail, there will always be those few who will recognize this dedication.
