What is legal in Calgary?
There are strict laws and regulations around the legalization of non-medical cannabis. Before you buy, use, or grow your own non-medical cannabis, learn more about what’s legal and what’s not.
Medical cannabis is within the responsibility of Health Canada. To find out more, go to Health Canada.
Is buying weed online legal in Calgary?
In the years predating legalization, you would have to pay a visit to one of the many physical dispensaries around the Calgary area. Many of these stores would only sell for medical purposes to patients.
Today, recreational (a.k.a. non-medical) cannabis is legal in Canada, and each municipality across Alberta has the right to decide where and if they want retail stores in their city or town.
Buyers are limited to 30 grams (or equivalent of extract, edible, or topical) of cannabis per transaction, which is also the legal public possession limit. Consumer education will be embedded in the retail of cannabis, and retail outlets will display point-of-purchase signage and other informational materials to help customers make responsible choices.
The official government-run website to order weed online is Alberta Cannabis (AC), although we find their offering a little light and restrictive. Which is why we created our marketplace for shopping Canadian weed online, offering lower prices and a greater selection.

How much weed can I legally possess in Calgary?
Adults 18+ can possess up to 30 grams (or equivalent of extract, edible or topical) of cannabis in a public place, in line with the federal possession limit.
When cannabis is in a car, it must be secured in closed packaging and not within reach of any occupants.
Young people — those under the legal age of 18 — are not allowed to buy or possess any cannabis. Youth who possess 5 grams or less will not be charged criminally (which could negatively impact their future), but will be subject to seizure of the cannabis, notification of parents or guardians, and penalties similar to those for underage possession of alcohol or tobacco.
Under federal legislation, adults can grow up to 4 plants per household from seeds bought from licensed cannabis retailers.
Renters, condo-dwellers, and those who live in multi-family dwellings may not be allowed to grow cannabis in their homes based on rules in rental agreements or condominium bylaws. Government will work to educate landlords, renters and condo boards on the options available to them.
- you can't consume in some public places – know your local laws
- only 4 plants can be grown per household
- driving high is illegal
- it can't be within reach of anyone in a vehicle
- edibles are legal, but it will take some time before they are available for sale
- kids can't enter cannabis stores, even with an adult
Are edibles, topicals, and extracts legal in Calgary?
As of October 17, 2019, federal cannabis regulations enforced new rules to allow legal production and sale of three new classes of cannabis products:
- Edible cannabis, such as baked goods and beverages;
- Cannabis extracts, such as vaping liquids, tinctures, wax, hash, and cannabis oil; and
- Cannabis topicals, such as creams, lotions and balms, and similar products that are meant to be applied to a person’s skin, hair, or nails
As required by the Cannabis Act, the amended regulations came into effect on October 17, 2019.
For a high-level overview of these new rules, please review: Final Regulations: Edible Cannabis, Cannabis Extracts, Cannabis Topicals.
Can I operate a vehicle or boat high?
Driving while impaired, whether by alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs, is a serious crime and puts everyone's safety at risk. Drug-impaired driving is still impaired driving, with the same consequences as driving while impaired by alcohol. New impaired driving laws are now in effect. Education will also continue to be a critical part of our strategy to address drug-impaired driving.
It can be used in motorhomes or other motor vehicles, or campers, or trailers when being used as a private residence and parked off a public road or forest service road where camping is allowed.
Cannabis can be transported in a vehicle as long as it’s in its original, unopened packaging, or is inaccessible to the driver and occupants (for example, in the trunk). In addition, a maximum of four non-medical cannabis plants can be transported in a vehicle, but they cannot be budding or flowering.
Non-medical cannabis use is generally not allowed on boats. However, you are allowed to use non-medical cannabis on a boat that is moored or anchored if it has sleeping accommodations, a kitchen and a toilet.
Non-medical cannabis use is allowed in a private cabin on a commercially operated boat if the operator allows it.
Can I use weed publicly in Calgary?
Albertans 18+ are allowed to consume cannabis in their homes and in some public spaces, but it is banned in vehicles.
Municipalities have the power to create additional restrictions on public use. Know your local rules before consuming, which you can brush up on here: Tobacco and Smoking Reduction Act (Section 3).
To protect children and limit second-hand exposure, public smoking or vaping of cannabis is prohibited in the same places tobacco is restricted, plus:
- On any hospital property, school property or child care facility
- Property in or within a prescribed distance from:
- a playground
- a sports or playing field
- a skateboard or bicycle park
- a zoo
- an outdoor theatre
- an outdoor pool or splash pad
- in any motor vehicle except, those being used as temporary residences, such as parked RVs
Cannabis cannot be consumed at any cannabis retail outlet. Provincial laws have established a number of consequences when cannabis is consumed in public or in a vehicle, including fines and other administrative penalties.
If you are caught in public with possession of marijuana you will be allowed to have up to 30 grams (about one ounce) of dried marijuana on you at any time.
You will only be able to use it in:
- a private residence (your home or someone else’s), including the outdoor space (for example, a porch or back yard)
- your unit or on your balcony, if you live in a multi-unit building like an apartment or condo (depending on your building’s rules or your lease agreement)
- many outdoor public places (parks, sidewalks)
You’re not allowed to use it in:
- private residences like long-term care homes and retirement homes
- schools or places where children gather (parks, playgrounds, childcare centres)
- motorized vehicles or while driving
- publicly owned places (sports field
- restaurant and bar patios
- sheltered outdoor areas where public frequents (bus shelters)
These rules are in place to protect people from second-hand marijuana smoke, and reduce youth and young adult exposure to cannabis.
If you are caught using marijuana in public you can be fined of up to:
- $1,000 for a first offence
- $5,000 for repeat offences
Since legalization in 2018, cannabis has taken Canada by storm. Every day, thousands of new Canadians dabble with cannabis products. Whether using cannabis for medical or recreational purposes, the legalization of the cannabis plant has opened a massive market for the sale of cannabis both in-person and online.
And despite the increased ubiquity of cannabis, the industry continues to be shrouded in mystery for most of us. My Supply Co. was born out of frustration with the confusion, overwhelm, and discomfort around buying and consuming cannabis. So we did something about it, offering a needs-based shopping experience to deliver solutions for sex, anxiety, pain, sleep, energy, focus, and mood.
My Supply Co. exists with one mission in mind: to make weed make sense by marrying purpose, function, design, and authenticity. We believe strongly that, if we are unforgiving to every detail, there will always be those few who will recognize this dedication.
